Dr Salim Engineer Addressing the gathering

Dr Mohammad Salim Engineer National Secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind  addressed a gathering of Muslim social workers and organizational heads at Abrar Masjid Hall, Margao during his visit to the state.  Mr. Ateequr Rehman introduced Dr. M Salim Engineer to the gathering and invited him to address on the issue of “ The Current Circumstances and Our Responsibilities”.

Dr. M.Salim Engineer said that the results of the elections 2014 was not what the Muslims in India wanted  and neither expected. He said it was necessary to educate the Muslims of the new circumstances and understand the greater responsibility  to be fulfilled in the coming years.

He said though the BJP had gained the political victory the vote share when calculated was only 21% of the population. He said this meant that 79% did not vote for BJP. But the elections results were democratic and the elections were through legitimate electoral process so the results are the desire of the people in this democratic country.

He said now it is the responsibility of all individuals and organizations that desire to uphold equality and justice as guaranteed in the constitution of India to work unitedly and co-operate with each other. He said the history of BJP and their agenda to tinker with the constitution that upholds secularism makes it important for the civic society to be more vigilant. He said the civic society consisting of all social, secular and religious organizations for equality and justice will have to co-operate and act as an effective pressure group on the  new government to check all anti-people policies and laws.

He asked the assembly to play a constructive role in the society and work for the welfare of all and to educate people that divisive politics based on hatred has never helped any society and has always proved detrimental. He said as Muslims we needed to fulfill our responsibilities as “ Khair e Ummat” towards the larger society and until we do this the apprehensions will not vanish away. The program concluded with a short Q&A session. Ameer e Halqa Goa Mr. Abdul Wahid Khan shared the dais with Dr. M. Salim Engineer.
