Capitalism of Passion

The market forces are at their best trying to induce people of all ages to buy gifts to express their love. This reaches its epitome during Valentine’s Day.

While we know that Valentine’s Day is celebrated globally with a lot of excitement, the Girls Islamic Organisation – Goa  began a small initiative  to make the public aware of the origins of this day and how over a period of time marketing agencies have made a farce of true love and replaced it with relationships of  passion and immorality.
To start with a  Facebook page was created and shared with maximum number of youngsters which received many likes.
Similarly some pictures displaying the ill effects of celebrating it were shared on other social sites like Twitter and Instagram which was liked by a lot of youngsters.
From the 9th of February folders were distributed by the girls in Schools and Colleges.
The contents of these folders explicitly explained how the actual celebration of this day came into being and how the companies are making money  through such celebrations, and ultimately how the public especially the younger generation is being deceived.
Folders were distributed in Mapusa, Panjim, Margao, Vasco, Bicholim and Sanquelim  to students, teachers, School Principals, a few doctors and house wives too.
College and School staff appreciated this idea and the work done, and said that it was a great initiative taken by the organisation and that in near future if more and more people get convinced with this idea, we could put an end to such unnecessary celebrations and get involved in something which could prove fruitful to our soceity.

Some the feedbacks of the capaign:
Mrs.Eulalia Rebeiro, the  Principal of  Assagao Union High School says ”This is a very good step taken, today’s youth have forgotten the actual concept of love and seem to be spoiling their lives and careers due to such things”

Miss Shefali Kamat, a Lecturer at St. Xavier’s College – “Valentine’s Day is a means of filling pockets of Archie’s and Hallmark stores, it’s not the only day to show love. Good work”

Miss Melanie,a Student of St. Xaviers College. Says “Love is all about sacrifice, and not about gifts and physical things. This article in the folder changed my thinking”.
