Assalmu alaikom,
The month of Ramadhan is here yet again and for that we all need to thank Allah . Let us resolve and strive to seek Allah’s Blessings and Bounty as it appears before us by:
fasting with a sense of accountability.
reciting the Holy Quran with understanding.
leading our lives according to the teachings of the Holy Quran , and traditions of the Prophet Muhammad(saw).
standing in the night prayers, particularly on the odd nights of the last ten days in search of “ The Night of Power”
invoking , supplicating and seeking forgiveness from Allah.
spending more in charity.
Reforming ourselves and becoming better Muslims.
Obligatory charity giving is an act of worship and spiritual investment. The literal meaning of Zakah is purity and it refers to the annual amount in kind or cash which a Muslim with means must distribute among the rightful beneficiaries. Zakah does not only purify the property of the contributor but also purifies his heart from selfishness and greed. It also purifies the heart of the recipient from envy and jealousy, from hatred and uneasiness and it fosters instead good-will and warm wishes for the contributors.
Zakah has a deep humanitarian and social-political value; for example, it frees society from class consciousness, from ill feelings and distrust and from corruption. Although Islam does not hinder private enterprise or condemn private possession, it does not tolerate selfish and greedy capitalism. Islam adopts a moderate but positive and effective course between individual and society, between the citizen and the state, between capitalism and socialism, between materialism and spiritualism.
Zakah is paid on the net balance after paying personal expenses, family expenses, due credits, taxes, etc. Every Muslim male or female who at the end of the year is in possession of the equivalent of 85 grams of gold or more in cash or articles of trade, must give Zakah at the minimum rate of 2.5%. Taxes paid to government do not substitute for this religious duty. The contributor should not seek pride or fame but if disclosing his name and his contribution is likely to encourage others, it is acceptable to do so.
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. Zakat concerns with the wealth of every muslim man and woman and is their religious and social obligation. God willing the Muslim who pays Zakat would further prosper. Allah has warned those who are eligible to pay Zakat but do not pay. May Allah guide all eligible Muslims , man and woman to pay Zakat. Ameen.
WHO ARE ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE ?
The Holy Quran has clearly stated the persons and categories eligible to receive “Zakat”
“ The offerings given for the sake of Allah are ( meant ) only for the poor and the needy and those employed to administer zakat and those whose hearts are to be won over; and for the freeing of human beings from bondage, and for those who are overburdened with debts, and ( for struggle) in Allah’s cause and for the wayfarer” ( Quran 9:60)
Jamaat-e-Islami Hind a brief introduction
A religious and reformist movement has been striving to introduce and establish the Islamic system of life. It presents Islamic teachings and invites the fellow citizens to understand the fundamental concepts of Islam i.e “ Tawheed, Risalat and the Akhirath . Amongst the Muslims it works for their educational and economic upliftment. It educates them to recognize their responsibility of understanding , preaching and establishing Islam. At the social level it is constantly making efforts to provide justice and ensure the security of each individuals fundamental right.
ZAKAT FUND AND THE ACTIVITIES OF JIH GOA
Zakat could be spend on eight different categories as prescribed in the Quran.The activities of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Goa Zone through its many institutions ensure the judicious distribution of Zakat fund in all the eight categories as mentioned in the Quran. In the first category it reaches out to the poor and needy through its social service wing (HRS-GOA) providing monthly ration kit and making arrangements for their medical and educational requirements.The second category provides for the salary and expenses towards arrangements for Zakat collection. The third category encourages, facilities and gifts for new reverts to Islam and winning hearts of people towards Islam. The fourth category are efforts made by legal wing if JIH to release innocent Muslim youth languishing in jails on false and concocted charges. Next category where funds can be spent is providing financial aid for Muslims who are in debt and this too is facilitated through the social service wing of JIH Goa.
JIH Goa uses zakat fund in the seventh category namely “Spending In the Cause of Allah” ( Fi sabillilah). This means to spend in the cause of propagating Islam and establishing Islam. In these times, when humanity has ignored the Creator, every right thinking Muslim understands the importance of working towards propagating the religion of truth – Islam. To propagate and endeavor to establish the system of Islam, all efforts that are directly related to the protection and strengthening of Islam and all the virtuous deeds are to be understood as ‘ in the cause of Allah’”. The renowned Arab scholar Yusuf al – Qardhawi writes , “ To present the right concept of Islam to All, to invite others towards Islam, to guide Muslim youth to follow Islamic teachings, to allay misunderstandings about Islam are ’in the cause of Allah’”. Zakat fund constitute a very important portion in fulfilling the above needs of “fi sabillilah”.
The eight category where zakat funds can be used is , for the “Wayfarer”- a traveller stranded or in need.
